Abstract
From Raetia to Tyrol
The first millennium of the Common Era is filled with stories of origin, master narratives and historical images, a situation that is naturally true both for Tyrol and elsewhere. Parallel with the historical development of the last two centuries, these master narratives have led to hard and fast conceptions about conquerors and subjugated in the historical past, as well as about notions of ethnic and linguistic demarcation.
This journal issue approaches questions of continuity and transformation in the period of transition between antiquity and the Middle Ages from different disciplinary perspectives. The first three contributions offer a historical and archaeological overview of the first millennium in the Roman province of Rhaetia and its early medieval successor territories. At the same time, the respective authors address research debates and the many uncertainties and unanswered questions regarding how to place the region in a wider context. The next three articles deal with specific problems in the analysis of inscriptions, ethnographic lists and maps, as well as archaeological findings in what is now the region of Trentino.
In bringing together all these different disciplinary and regional perspectives, the journal provides far reaching insights into the current state of research on the historical development of the province of Rhaetia and the subsequent territorial organization of the region.
