Abstract

Zones of Contact in Central Europe

Mary Louise Pratt introduced the concept of transcultural zones of contact in order to describe overseas colonial spaces, but her flexible definition of social spaces allows for its application to other regions and areas as well. Accordingly, this issue of the journal takes up the impulses emanating from Pratt’s conceptual approach and applies them to the investigation of regions in Central Europe around 1900. In doing so, the main articles focus on the Habsburg Monarchy, whereas the contributions in the Forum section expand the discussion both geographically and chronologically. In particular, the authors concentrate on issues of multilingualism, transnational or transcultural cooperation, and practices of knowledge in contact zones.
